One From the Vault: Bayesian Probability

[Originally posted Oct. 12, 2009]

Spent the early hours of this morning reading a great blog post by Jeff Atwood which makes reference to a Elizer S. Yudkowsky’s Intuitive Explanation of  Bayesian Probability. The timing was good as I had just finished the (highly recommended) book The Drunkard’s Walk which agreed with Jeff that most humans simply are not wired to deal with probability very well.

Windows Phone Fundamentals–Navigation

Windows Phone Fundamentals

Continuing my mini-series on Windows Phone Fundamentals, begun here, this tutorial will Navigation cover the topic of navigating from one page to another.  This is one of those tasks that are wicked simple once you know how, but which are not at first obvious at all.

To see this at work, create a new Windows Phone application and name it navigation.  Open MainPage.xaml and set the ApplicationTitle to Navigation and set the PageTitle to Page 1.

Windows Phone Fundamentals–Layout

Windows Phone Fundamentals

The Windows Phone From Scratch mini-tutorials are going back to the fundamentals for Grid those who are new to Windows Phone Programming.  Today, we cover basic layout with the Grid Control.

The Grid control is often compared to table-based layout in HTML, but this can be misleading.  While it is true that the table often should not be used in HTML programming, the Grid does not suffer the limitations or bloat of the table, and is an essential layout control for the Phone.

Changing Teams But Not Focus

Change is always difficult and exciting.  I’ve been with the Developer Division since I home change for a goldfish to a better place started at Microsoft, working in the same role (Community PM) for a number of different managers.  I have now moved to the Windows Phone Team as Developer Community Evangelist: Windows Phone, working for Luke Nyswonger (Developer Content) in the International Content Group under Peter Mabee.

While details are still to be worked out, I believe that what I’ll be doing day to day will not change significantly, except that you will see a sharper focus on Windows Phone development, migrating to Windows Phone and technologies of importance to Windows Phone developers.  My podcast, videos and blog will continue, though some of my work may appear in new places, such as the Windows Phone Hub.

I’m looking forward to all of it and hope that you will let me know what you need, what you like and what you want to see improved.

Some hobbies are made for geeks…

…A couple month’s ago, my daughter’s friend wanted me to take 3 feeder goldfish that were no longer needed Fantail after the fish appeared on stage in a college production.  No problem, we had a 5 gallon tank and filter, how hard could it be?

It is now two months later. Those three have died, I’m sorry to say.  And I have 30 other fish.  In 4 tanks.

It’s not my fault.

The LINQ Zip Operator

LINQ

I am a strong believer that .NET programmers in general, and Windows Phone programmers in particular need to become proficient in LINQ.  As part of that belief and commitment to the Windows Phone community, I have created a series of postings on  LINQ, and in this posting we take a look at the zip operator.
