Catching up on some flicks

It’s August and it’s hot, and it’s time for a few movie recommendations…

I assume you’ve seen The Matrix and Memento.  If not, stop reading and go watch those right now.  If you did see them and you liked them, you’ll probably also really like:

Inception – This great sf film considers what happens if technology lets you share a  dream with others.

Dependency Properties

Windows Phone Tutorial

Dependency properties are like the sewers, electric wires and pipes running under the streets of a big city. You can ignore them, you can even be oblivious to their existence, but they make all the magic happen and when something breaks you really want to understand them.

Before we begin exploring Dependency Properties, let’s review Properties themselves. To do that, we go back into the dark early days of C++ when what we had available in a class were methods and  member variables (fields).

When I was a boy, there were no properties, VCRs or digital watches…

Bing Maps Task

You’ve seen in previous Windows Phone Mini-tutorials STATUE of Libertythat all tasks have the same basic structure:

  • Instantiate the task
  • Add any specifying data
  • Show the task

The Bing Maps Task is no different. In fact, it is so simple to use I hesitate to dedicate a mini-tutorial to it.  This will be brief.

Music of the Day–Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy

Turned on to this album by a buddy, it has some of the best ArmstrongSt. Louis Blues I’ve heard. Truly brilliant. Incredible music, incredible performances.

W.C. Handy (1873-1958) was known by some as the father of the Blues. This album will give you a solid idea why.

Stachmo (1901-1971) was one of the most inventive cornet and trumpet players of all time. Again, you hear it on this album.  Tremendous “presence” and tremendous personality were combined with amazing talent.

Can’t recommend this album highly enough.

Mango’s New Accelerometer Emulator

Windows Phone Tutorial

Mango brings a new extended emulator with emulation of the accelerometer. This image allows you to test applications that use the accelerometer within the emulator before doing your final testing on the device. (Previously you had to pick up your entire desktop computer and twist it back and forth, now you can leave it safely on your desk).

To see this at work, we’ll create a new Windows application with a dot that we’ll “move” around the page based on tilting and twisting the emulated phone.
